Grass-Fed and Finished Beef
At Bird Tree Farm, we’re all about giving our cattle the good life! Our happy animals have roamed free, munching on lush, green pastures that are bursting with life and biodiversity – just the way nature intended. This idyllic setting not only keeps our bovine buddies and wildlife content but also enhances the flavour of the beef, making every bite a little taste of paradise.
You can count on our animals being 100% grass-fed and finished. The only supplement feed they get are vegetable scraps from our Bottled Culture production (It’s a circular economy at work!) and if necessary hay or silage in winter.
We also believe in allowing the animal to finish to a proper size, slowly. What does this mean? Well it means our animals grow out until about 3 to 5 years old. This is longer than standard as many cattle are fattened on grain and slaughtered by the age of 2 or younger. When raising cattle on pastures only, the longer time frame allows them to develop the fats required for succulent and tender meat with rich marbling. It also gives the animal a longer life which we feel is important too. It does not mean they have tough meat but it does mean the steaks are big!
Grass-fed and finished beef is not just a treat for your taste buds; it’s also a health-conscious choice. Our beef is packed full of omega-3 fatty acids and vitamins, making it a nourishing option for your family. Plus, you can feel good about supporting sustainable farming practices that put the environment and animal welfare first.
So, when you sink your teeth into our succulent grass-fed beef, know that you’re not just enjoying a delicious meal; you’re savouring the goodness of nature, one bite at a time.
Our cattle are a mix of Angus, Simmental, and hereford composite breeds with a dash of Santa gertrudis thrown in. We believe in hybrid vigour and are more concerned with producing resilient animals that calve easily, have low birth weights but grow quickly, forage well, resist parasites, and require few inputs, rather than seeking out stud or pure genetics.
Holistic grazing informs our pasture management. This means we rotate the mob to new paddocks regularly, allowing the pasture to recover before being grazed again. This keeps our cattle healthy and happy whilst improving ecosystem processes (a more effective carbon cycle, water cycle, solar flow and community dynamics) and continuing to regenerate the land. It also means our animals are quiet, friendly and easy to handle.
We don’t use any synthetic fertilisers or herbicides, or drench our animals with unnecessary chemical pesticides, vaccines or antibiotics (unless medically neccessary). Instead we employ a team of over 7000 dung beetles to speed up nutrient cycling in the soil and reduce our parasite burden (flies, ticks etc), as well as providing free choice minerals to keep optimum cattle health.
